Hope was spayed on March 11, 2008 and given a rabies vaccination. Our veterinarian says Hope is approximately 2 years old - 3 years old at the most. He also confirmed our belief that Hope has whelped a litter of puppies in the not-too-distant past. Hope's incision quickly healed but it seems it will take a bit longer for her shaved belly to recover.
Hope now moves her head in an attempt to catch cookies which, sadly, has served to decrease rather than increase her accuracy.

It's worth noting that Hope is only a little damp in these photos while all but one of the other dogs are soaked from the rain. It was time for another cookie (dog biscuit) catching lesson. Hope has gone from no clue what to do to a technique that closely resembles a trained orca waiting for a fish reward... When her name is called and she knows a cookie is coming her way, she opens her mouth and hopes that the cookie lands inside.
She really is a cutie! In the second photo you can clearly see her cream-colored coat and biscuit ears and muzzle. No, that isn't mud splattered on her face - they're freckles!
February 8, 2008 - update from Hope's foster family
Tomorrow will be two weeks
since Hope joined us so this weekend I will try to get better photos for the
website.
Hope was scanned for a microchip and, not surprisingly, none was
detected. So, an AVID microchip was implanted - she is now officially
"chipped".
Hope has her own small yard when we're at work but pretty much runs with
the pack when we're home as long as we can see/supervise them. Our
boy has decided to just ignore her for the most part. I think he's waiting
for this new attention-hog to leave so that the world will get back to revolving
around him. <G> We've left Hope uncrated for the past
three nights and she's been a good girl.
Hope didn't want to eat much of anything for the first two days and had zero
interest in cookies dog biscuits. Well, it didn't take long for her to get
comfortable in the house. She quickly began to bounce excitedly whenever
the kibble was measured out, lines up for cookies along with the rest of the
gang and discovered the simply joy of peanut butter. Beef knuckles
are good, too. Hope is now often right at our side whenever we move
through the house but especially if we are heading in the general direction of
the kitchen. We've created a monster! <VBG>
Not a single potty accident and she goes in and out of the dog door without
hesitation. I expect that she will soon be blasting through it at the
speed of sound like the others.
She was briefly introduced to our cat several days ago and was very excited to
meet him. She was loose in the house and my husband was carrying the
cat so it was more of a cat "sighting". We'll see if we can get
the cat around her while she's leashed to see if she's simply excited to meet
kitty or excited to meet kitty so she can eat him.
Hope will be getting a bath
tomorrow and I expect she will turn out to be a very plush puppy!

We received word from the Friends of Gonzales Animal Shelter that Hope had been tested for heartworm and the results were...negative! Woo hoo!
January 27, 2008
Hope is a Sammy mix that was taken from the Gonzales [County] Animal Shelter on 1/26/08 and is now being fostered in a private residence. She was brought to our attention via an email from the Friends of Gonzales Animal Shelter, a volunteer organization that lists the shelter dogs on Petfinder.com and other sites to help them find forever homes.
Hope was found in Gonzales County as a stray and taken to the shelter on 1/8/08. She appears to be in good health although she could stand to gain a few pounds. It is likely that living at the shelter for the past 2.5 weeks affected her appetite.
Hope is a compact but solid little girl. She has a cute "bear" head and short, plush coat that is creamy white and biscuit. She is very quiet - not a peep out of her so far. Although she isn't very outgoing we wouldn't describe her as shy. She is a bit tentative right now but then again she's only been in her foster home for a little over 24 hours. Hope is a quick study - she's already learned to use a dog door.
At this time we have no age estimate but will have a better idea once our veterinarian has examined her.
Speaking of our vet, Hope will soon be making a trip for a general checkup, rabies vaccination and heartworm test. She is currently in heat so we will have to wait a little while to have her spayed.
If you are interested in adopting Hope, please complete an adoption application.
*Please note that all of our rescue dogs are spayed/neutered and microchipped prior to being placed in their new homes*
